Pioneers School Program
March through June
Gold Nugget Museum

Since 1994, fifty or more third, fourth and fifth grade classes from schools all over the North Valley come to the museum each year to recreate the settler experience. They come from March to early June, two classes at a time. Teachers begin signing up for the program by early fall, some as soon as they have completed the previous year's program. Visit the Gold Nugget Museum website for more information and to watch videos about the Pioneer program.

Learning about

Your Community

Judy Buzza, from Oakdale School in Oroville, says this is a fun way to teach your children at home or school about your local area.  Just pick up some local maps of your town (AAA is a great source).  Before you give them to your children, make a list of all the local attractions, land formations, streets, important places that you want your children to be able to locate on their maps.  Then compose a scavenger-hunt- type worksheet of places you want your children to find. (Examples: Locate three parks in Oroville, and give the map coordinates.  Find the city library, and write down the street that it's on.   List two of your favorite fast-food restaurants, and give the map coordinates.   Is the Feather River east or west of _____?)  Get the idea?!  As well as writing the answers, children can highlight the locations with felt tips or crayons.   Then for a reward, you can visit some of the places that they found, and maybe round off the trip with a visit to a favorite fast-food  restaurant for a meal or snack.  What a fun way to learn!  Thanks to Judy Buzza for a super idea!

Artsy Tall Tales...

When Becky Jarvis is teaching about tall tales, it's fun to visit her classroom at Ophir School in Oroville.  Her walls are decorated with colorful tall tale characters that her students have created from adding machine tape and construction paper.  Her students write their tall tales on the long strips of machine tape.  Then they glue on their tall tale character's head at the top and appropriately matching shoes or feet at the bottom.   You can tell that Mrs. Jarvis' 5th-graders really like this activity because many of their tall tale characters are very, very, very tall!  Thanks to Becky Jarvis and her class for sharing this great idea!

More Ideas...

School Newscast...

Choose a few students to film a newscast for the week's news at school.  Have them pick important events that are taking place that week and work as a news team to present the news on videotape.  Each student should create a short speech about his/her topic (school events, sports, weather...)  One of the reporters can also serve as director, while another student can be the camera-person.  The total newscast should be less than 10 minutes long and can be shown to the class and/or other  classes on Friday. (Five to six students make an ideal news team.  It takes about 20-30 minutes on Monday through Wednesday to write and  practice  their newscast.  Then allow 30 minutes for filming on Thursday.)  As the weeks go by, you will notice a definite evolution in the quality of reports and filming.  Also, the personalities of the different teams really start shining through! (Note: These news teams work exceptionally well with a parent supervisor.  However, some 5th-6th grade teams can do most of the work, practice and newscasts on their own.)
